STAR Community Credit Union History
STAR Community Credit Union is the oldest locally owned and operated financial institution in Chico.
STAR was formed in 1958 under state charter by four college professors who believed that a credit union would provide necessary benefits to the faculty and staff of Chico State and other Chico schools. It has since grown to include students, teachers, alumni and retirees of all Butte County schools, employees of the Chico Police Department, Enloe Medical Center employees and Doctors affiliated with Enloe Medical Center and their employees. Find out if you are eligible for membership.
The first officers of the newly formed credit union were President Elvin Shepherd, Vice President Fred Newman, Treasurer John Hawley and Secretary David Lantis. The foresight of these gentlemen and others who have followed have benefited many thousands of members of our community over the years through both competitive rates paid on deposits and interest rates charged on a variety of loan products.
STAR is proud to represent a broad range of the North State community and its diverse cultures. In over 50 years of civic involvement, we have watched with pride as Butte County and our residents have grown and thrived. Thanks to our members, we too continue to flourish. With their support, we look forward to the next 50 years of success.
